The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) Low License Plate Lottery began on July 8th and will run until 5 PM Friday, September 2, 2022.
Each year the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles releases a small amount of the most sought after low license plate numbers and holds a lottery for drivers to try and win a desired plate.
For 2022 there are 199 low number license plates available, including a rare two digit number plate. While there is no fee to enter the contest, all winners are required to pay a registration fee for the license plate.
A few rules to keep in mind before entering the Low Plate Lottery:
- Paper entries are no longer accepted for the contest. All lottery entries must be made online.
- Requests for specific plate numbers will not be honored.
- One entry per applicant. It doesn’t matter the number of active registrations one has.
- You must be a Massachusetts resident. That means a currently registered and insured passenger vehicle.
- Neither companies nor corporations may apply for a Low Number Plate.
- Sorry, RMV employees and immediate family members are not eligible to enter.

The drawing will be held on September 13th and by law, the Registry must announce all of this year’s winners by September 15, 2022. Winners will be notified by mail and they will have until Friday, December 30, 2022 to transfer their old license plate to their new lottery plate.
