Massachusetts law requires builders to maintain minimum levels of workers’ compensation and commercial auto. Most builders and contracting businesses also have a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP). At a minimum, McSweeney & Ricci recommends your BOP contains General Liability Coverage, Commercial Property Coverage, Business Income Coverage and Coverage for Contractor Tools.

    • General Liability- Sometimes called “Commercial General Liability.” CGL protects your business if a customer or an employee claims they were injured or that their property was damaged by your business. CGL also helps protect your business from claims of false advertising or slander.
    • Commercial Property- This coverage can safeguard your warehouse, workshop or other facility, whether you rent or own. It also protects the furniture, equipment and the tools inside your facility.
    • Business Income Coverage- Also known as, Business Income and Extra Expense insurance (BIEE), this important coverage reimburses you when your business is forced to temporarily shut down after a covered loss. BIEE can replace your income and other covered expenses such as payroll and rent while your property is being repaired.
    • Contractor Equipment Coverage-As a builder or contractor your tools and equipment are essential. This policy provides funds for stolen, missing or damaged contractors equipment, it can also cover small tools, employees’ equipment and clothing and any borrowed equipment. This coverage can even help pay for debris removal or cleanup after an accident.

Additional Types of Builders Insurance Massachusetts Contractors Often Need

mason cutting granite slab insurance for masons

Roofer working on roof insurance for general contractors

bid bonds for contractors in Massachusetts

Additional coverages above those typically included in a BOP, are often required to win contracts and secure funding.  Our experienced Commercial Lines Risk Managers will advise you on the proper levels of coverage for your specific business needs. These coverages may include:

    • Professional Liability/Errors & Omissions- If a customer claims your company has been negligent or caused an error that resulted in a financial loss, professional liability helps cover damages. It also protects against reputational harm and from employees claiming to have been treated unfairly, whether your company was actually at fault or not.
    • Cyber Liability Insurance/Cyber Fraud Insurance-Every business uses technology, and the cyber threats faced by businesses increase and grow more sophisticated each day. Cyber Liability insurance helps minimize the damage after a business has a data breach or experiences a cyber-attack.
    • Employee Dishonesty-Also called employee theft insurance protects your business from the financial damage that results if one or more of your employees steals from the company or commits some other criminal act.
    • Commercial Umbrella-Adds another layer of protection after the limits of your other policies have been reached.
